This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method to estimate body fat percentage from simple tape measurements. It is one of the most practical field methods available — more accessible than calipers and reasonably accurate when measurements are taken correctly. Take measurements first thing in the morning, measure at the narrowest point for waist and neck, and at the widest point for hips.

How to measure correctly

  • Neck:Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the long axis of the neck.
  • Waist (men): Measure at the navel, horizontally around the abdomen.
  • Waist (women): Measure at the narrowest point between the navel and the bottom of the rib cage.
  • Hips (women): Measure at the largest circumference around the buttocks.
  • Keep the tape snug but not compressed into the skin.

How the Calculation Works

The US Navy method estimates body fat from tape measurements instead of calipers, scans, or scales. It was developed for fleet-wide fitness assessments, so it had to work with nothing but a tape measure — and validation studies show it lands within a few percentage points of DEXA for most physiques. The logic: the difference between your waist (where fat accumulates) and your neck (which tracks lean mass) is a strong proxy for fatness, scaled by height.

Women include a hip measurement because female fat distribution differs — waist alone would systematically underestimate. All measurements are in centimeters, and technique matters more than the math: a tape pulled 1 cm tighter at the waist can shift the result by a full percentage point.

A Worked Example

A man who is 180 cm tall with a 88 cm waist and 38 cm neck: waist minus neck is 50 cm. Plugging into the formula gives roughly 18-19% body fat — the upper end of the "fitness" category. If three months of training and a moderate deficit bring his waist to 84 cm with the neck unchanged, the estimate drops to about 16%. That 2-3 point move is exactly the kind of change this method detects reliably, even if any single reading is a few points off in absolute terms.

Using Your Result in Training

Treat the number as a trend line, not a diagnosis. Measured monthly under identical conditions, it tells you whether your training and nutrition are actually shifting composition — something the scale alone cannot, since weight loss can be fat, muscle, or water. Pair it with your TDEE: if body fat is trending down while your gym numbers hold, your deficit is well-calibrated; if strength is dropping fast alongside the tape measurements, the deficit is likely too aggressive or protein too low.

For most lifters the productive play is unglamorous: a moderate calorie deficit, 1.8-2.2 g/kg of protein, and consistent progressive training. The waist measurement falling while the bar weight climbs is the clearest signal of successful recomposition you can get without a lab.

How often should I measure body fat?+

Every 2-4 weeks at most, always under the same conditions — same time of day, before eating, same tape positions. Week-to-week changes are smaller than the measurement error, so frequent measuring only adds noise.
